Raven leilani luster review6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Hours when I am desperate, when I am ravenous, when I know how a star becomes a void.” It’s that there are gray, anonymous hours like this. “It’s not that I want exactly this, to have a husband or home security system that, for the length of our marriage, never goes off. She’s drawn to Eric because of the challenge, his wife Rebecca agreed to an open marriage in exchange for her setting the rules. In the beginning of the novel, Edie is hooking up with multiple guys and one of them is an older man named Eric. ![]() Her thoughts are shocking and unfiltered or the most mundane observations about who got on the metro and the people she encounters. Luster reads like a soliloquy or a diary. She’s also teetering on the edge of depression?Įdie is alone AND lonely. She works at a publishing company which doesn’t pay well but… it’s a job and she has one (for now). Edie is a twenty three year old black woman who lives in New York. Luster integrates stereotypes about being a Millennial in an effortless and lucid manner, encompassing gender and race. ![]() If you’ve read and enjoyed Sally Rooney, Stephanie Danler ( Sweetbitter was a train wreck, but in the same spirit as Luster), Helen Oyeyemi or Ottessa Moshfeg you will be fond of Raven Leilani’s offering.Īccording to google, a Millennial is anyone born between the years 19. ![]() And let me tell you… this is quintessential Millennial fiction. We’re starting 2021 off with Luster, a lustrous (see what I did there?) debut from Raven Leilani. ![]()

Future feeling by joss lake6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() This book invites cisgender readers into an intimate trans world and it’s a real gift and delight. The novel speaks to so many important subjects: parenting, relationships, affairs, friendships, surviving in an expensive city (in this novel’s case, New York), and, of course, growth and understanding. This adult literary novel is one of my personal favorite reads of the last year. If you have other suggestions, please do leave them in the comments! Below is a round-up of ten great books (some currently out, some forthcoming) that center trans stories. Given that funds are understandably short for many during the pandemic, remember that you can support authors by requesting books at your local library and by reviewing what you’ve read in the past. Supporting media is a great way to expand your own mind and knowledge, while also supporting creators and businesses that support trans stories. ![]() Something else you can do? Promote and consume trans media. Some ways to honor and celebrate Trans Day of Visibility in any given year? Take time to brush up on allyship, pronouns, and donate to trans-focused groups and mutual aid funds if you’re able. This day is separate from the Trans Day of Remembrance, which commemorates lives lost. ![]() What is it? An annual day to celebrate and center transgender folks and their countless contributions to society. This year’s Trans Day of Visibility is on Wednesday, March 31, 2021. ![]()

Harry potter and the casual vacancy6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() The revelation that she walked in on her father being orally pleasured by his assistant Maureen years ago, passed on via The_Ghost_of_Barry_Fairbrother, likely causes Howard's second and near fatal heart attack and his wife's near attempt to kill him in a fit of rage just beforehand. One-Scene Wonder: Absent for most of the book and barely mentioned, Patricia Mollison's brief appearance near the end of the book has a large impact.Naturally, the Internet became flooded with fanfics like Harry Potter and the Miraculously Unguarded Vagina within hours of Vacancy's embargo lifting. Memetic Mutation: Some of the racier quotes like "miraculously unguarded vagina" are kinda hilarious when taken out-of-context because Rowling wrote them.Jerkass Woobie: Krystal and her mother Terri.Hilarious in Hindsight: Gaia's sentence in the book about how it's all "so white" at Winterdown (said to Sukhvinder during biology as they look into microscopes) becomes this with Gaia and Kay receiving Race Lift in the series. ![]() ![]() American fans, on the other hand, are simply divided. Americans Hate Tingle: While reviews for the book have been mixed everywhere, American book critics seem to slide more to the negative side, what with the book being far more about British issues and leaving certain intricacies of UK life unexplained for the foreign reader. ![]()

Bad for You by Kevin C. Pyle6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() Bad for You presents the facts, figures, and a whole lot more―in eye-grabbing graphics―to debunk these myths and give kids the power to prove there's nothing wrong with having fun. Pyle and Scott Cunningham cleverly expose the long-standing CAMPAIGN AGAINST FUN for what it really is: a bunch of anxious adults grasping at straws, ignoring scientific data, and blindly yearning for the good old days that never were. Stuff in this book goes back centuries―all the way to Plato (yeah, that one) and his worries over the new "technology" of his time: the written word! Kevin C. But, honestly―is it?!īad for You asks this question and many more―and not just about the things that modern parents fear like violent video games, social media, and dirty hands. These are all real headlines screaming about the terrible stuff that's out there. STUDENT ARRESTED FOR "PASSING GAS" AT SCHOOL ![]()

![]() ![]() Filled with stories and warm, practical advice, Spiritual Sobriety offers a gentle path out of the desperate cycles of craving-euphoria-hangover and into a freer, clean-and-sober faith practice. The author, who grew up in a hyper-controlling church cult, will help you find hope and rebirth in the ruins of disillusioned faith. If you've ever wondered how a religion that preaches freedom and love can produce judgmental and unkind followers if you've ever felt captive to the demanding God of your own childhood if you've struggled to find contentment without needing another emotional hit from a "life-changing" conference or "mountaintop experience," then Spiritual Sobriety is for you. I don’t remember how I found her probably by following a long trail of link-crumbs but the second I stumbled into her talking about Michael and Debi Pearl and Victoria’s Secret panties, I was hooked. It's in families who inexplicably choose to harm their children in order to abide by cultic church doctrine, but it's in ordinary believers, too, who use God the same way addicts use drugs or alcohol-to numb pain, to alter their mood, or simply to escape the realities of this messy, unpredictable thing called LIFE. 'Girl at the End of the World' by Elizabeth Esther I started reading Elizabeth Esther’s blog around this time last year. In a compelling follow-up to her memoir "Girl at the End of the World," Elizabeth Esther explores how religious fervor can become religious addiction. IT IS AVAILABLE IN BOOKSTORES NATIONWIDE, ONLINE AND AT YOUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY. ![]() ![]() ![]() Elizabeth's second book, " Spiritual Sobriety," WAS PUBLISHED IN April, 2016. ![]() |
